Honorable Mention
Weep for the Woman
M. Kathryn Black

Weep for the woman who walked to Montgomery,
who saved the lives of so many,
who shook hands with the mighty.
Weep for the woman who went as a Quaker
to the once dangerous land of Vietnam,
then wrote articles for peace in Japan.
Weep for the woman who heard our Creator
speak to her on the New York Subway,
was granted a glimpse of heaven
that few people have seen.
Weep because she says it means nothing,
because she's still hunting
for something she has.
She's filled with self-loathing;
she's destroying herself,
a martyr to no single cause.
Weep for the woman, for the tired and worn
who thinks her life's wasted,
who starves and keeps suffering,
gives hate everlasting
to the least of God's servants, herself.
